She observed that people facing death go through an emotional rollercoaster—from the moment they learn about their illness to the moment they accept their situation. In the early stages of her work, she faced considerable resistance to her conversations with terminal patients. Over time, however, she gained more recognition for her work, particularly from doctors and psychiatrists. Her findings are detailed in her book On Death and Dying, where she identifies five stages of emotion: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
This model expands to seven stages and can be applied to various life situations, such as losing a job, missing a promotion, conflicts, or divorce. Share a situation with a friend, colleague, or bestie—it doesn’t have to be dramatic. Understanding the seven steps and being able to express your feelings can provide great insight. In haar boek “On Death and Dying” worden haar resultaten beschreven.
