The book outlines 3 qualities necessary to transition from a \u201cdependent\u201d to an \u201cindependent\u201d person or employee.<\/p>\n<p>In habit 1, <strong>\u201cBe Proactive,\u201d<\/strong> Covey describes the Circle of Influence and the Circle of Concern.<\/p>\n<p>The problems we face can be categorized as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Directly controllable:<\/strong><\/em> Problems related to our own behavior<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Indirectly controllable:<\/strong><\/em> Problems related to the behavior of others<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>No control:<\/em><\/strong> Problems we cannot influence, such as our past and certain aspects of our environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Proactive people focus on the things within their Circle of Influence. Reactive people, on the other hand, focus mainly on their Circle of Concern: the weaknesses of others and the problems in their environment. This focus generates a lot of negative energy and frustration, which causes them to neglect the issues within their direct influence.
